What Is Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced?

Resynced is a full remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013), rebuilt from scratch in the latest version of Ubisoft’s proprietary Anvil engine — the same engine that powered Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The project is led by Ubisoft Singapore, with many of the original game’s developers returning for the rebuild.

This is not a remaster. Assets, rendering systems, water simulation, weather, combat, and stealth have all been rebuilt rather than upscaled. Game director Richard Knight stated in today’s showcase: “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced matters deeply to us and to you. That’s why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG. The focus stays on how you play and how you explore the world.”

The story is unchanged. Edward Kenway’s arc through the Golden Age of Piracy remains the core of the experience.

Everything New in Resynced vs. the Original

Combat: parry-driven system

The original Black Flag used a fairly simple counter-attack combat model. Resynced introduces a parry-driven system — timing-based deflection that changes the rhythm of sword fights. Ubisoft described it as “cutthroat sword battles” with the parry mechanic at the center. Details on how it compares to Shadows’ system haven’t been fully disclosed, but this is a meaningful structural change, not a cosmetic one.

The Jackdaw gets the most substantial additions in Resynced:

  • Three new Officers — Lucy Baldwin, the Padre, and Dead Man Smith — each with their own unique side quest that expands their backstory. Complete a quest to assign them to your crew, and each brings a distinct special ability to naval combat. Dead Man Smith’s quest was cited in the showcase as an example: his ability unlocks double shots from your broadside weapons.
  • New secondary weapons added to the Jackdaw’s arsenal beyond the original’s setup.
  • Ship pets — a cat or monkey can accompany you as you sail.
  • More ship customization — new skins, expanded visual options.
  • Enemy AI overhaul — ships and factions now have alliances and rivalries that affect their behavior and loadouts dynamically.
  • 10 brand-new sea shanties — on top of every shanty from the original.

Improved stealth and parkour

Ubisoft confirmed improvements to both systems without releasing full details before launch. The indication from the showcase is that quality-of-life updates from later Assassin’s Creed games have been back-ported to Black Flag’s framework, with player feedback workshops informing which changes were made.

Reworked Playas

The small islands (Playas) scattered across the Caribbean have been redesigned with new rewards and unique encounters. This changes how exploration outside main missions is structured.

New story content with the original cast

Additional missions and entirely new scenes have been written and recorded, featuring Matt Ryan returning as Edward Kenway — the same actor who voiced Edward in 2013 — alongside the original supporting cast. Ubisoft hasn’t detailed exactly how much new content this represents, but it’s described as narrative additions rather than side content.

Woodkid’s reimagined track

GRAMMY-nominated French musician Woodkid, who contributed to the Assassin’s Creed franchise previously, is returning. He has created a reimagined track for Resynced. The full reveal of the track is slated for later in 2026 before launch.

Reworked Animus

The Animus framing — the meta-narrative device that wraps the historical adventure — has been updated with new content. Ubisoft has confirmed it’s been reworked but hasn’t released details.

Visual and technical overhaul

  • Raytraced Global Illumination (RTGI) across all graphics modes on consoles; “Extended” RT mode available on PC
  • Micropolygon and Physically Based Rendering (PBR) pipelines — new asset standard throughout
  • Fully modernized water rendering and simulation — the Caribbean ocean is the single biggest visual upgrade over the original
  • Dynamic weather via the Anvil Atmos system — storms, calm seas, variable wind conditions
  • Dolby Atmos audio support
  • Denser crowds, more detailed character faces, richer animations

What’s NOT in Resynced (Read Before Buying)

Several things from the original game and its expanded releases are absent from Resynced:

No original DLC. Freedom Cry (which followed the character Adéwalé) and the Aveline DLC mission are not included. If you want those stories, you’d need to play the original.

No multiplayer. The original Black Flag shipped with a competitive multiplayer mode. It is not in Resynced. This is confirmed and deliberate — Ubisoft has positioned Resynced as a focused single-player experience.

No Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. The game has not been confirmed for Switch 2. This was explicitly noted by Insider Gaming following the showcase.

Online requirement for install. One-time internet connection required to download and install. After that, the main campaign is fully offline.

PC System Requirements (All Tiers)

Resynced requires significantly stronger hardware than the 2013 original — expected given it’s a full rebuild. The game supports DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, and XeSS 3, plus dedicated presets for handheld devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. A built-in benchmark tool is included.

OS: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit) — DirectX 12 required across all tiers.

A note on the 4K requirement: The RTX 4090 for 4K 60 FPS is notable — it’s slightly below what Assassin’s Creed Shadows required for its “RT Extreme” 4K mode, which called for a 7800X3D/13700K CPU. Software raytracing is available for GPUs without hardware RT support, giving lower-end hardware access to advanced lighting effects.

All Editions and Prices

Standard Edition — $59.99

Base game only. Digital or physical. Physical version available through local retailers.

Pre-order bonus (all editions): Blackbeard’s Crimson Pack — exclusive Edward Kenway costume, a sword and pistol each with a unique perk.

Deluxe Edition — price not listed at time of writing (digital only)

  • Base game
  • Master Assassin Character Pack: sword, pistol, and trinket each with a unique perk, plus costume for Edward
  • Master Assassin Naval Pack: sail set, ship’s pet, crew attire, ship wheel, figurehead, hull trim

Collector’s Edition

  • Everything in the Deluxe Edition, plus:
  • Edward Kenway figurine (31 cm / 12 inch) — poised for battle on the deck of the Jackdaw
  • Edward wearable metal brooch
  • Exclusive Steelbook with art designed for Resynced
  • Cloth map of the Caribbean
  • Sea Shanty Music Sheet — stylized age-print of a new shanty sung aboard the Jackdaw
  • Blackbeard’s Crimson Pack (digital download)

Which edition to buy? Standard is the obvious pick for anyone who wants to play the game and nothing else — $59.99 is already $10 below the typical current-gen AAA price. The Deluxe’s character and naval packs are cosmetic and perk-based, not story content. The Collector’s Edition is for fans of physical memorabilia; the figurine and cloth map are the meaningful items.

PS5-Specific Features

  • Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers with DualSense controller
  • Raytraced Global Illumination (RTGI) across all graphics modes
  • Fidelity mode (30 FPS) adds raytraced reflections
  • 60 FPS Performance mode
  • PS5 Pro: higher graphical fidelity, additional rendering features, Enhanced PSSR included out of the box

Ubisoft’s Nicolas Lopez, Technical Architect at Ubisoft Montréal, stated: “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced pushes ray tracing further across all modes on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. PlayStation 5 brings more consistent lighting, while PlayStation 5 Pro delivers a no-compromise experience.”

What the Game Director Said

Richard Knight’s statement from today’s showcase is the clearest signal of Ubisoft’s intent with Resynced:

“Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced matters deeply to us and to you. That’s why we took the time to rebuild it with the care it deserves. This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG. The focus stays on how you play and how you explore the world.”

The explicit “it is not an RPG” line is a direct acknowledgment of the criticism that Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla received for departing from the franchise’s action-adventure roots. Resynced is positioning itself alongside the original Black Flag and Shadows as a return to character-focused play.
