To beat Grand Theft Auto V’s first three days in today’s money, Grand Theft Auto VI needs 14.4 million to 18.0 million copies. That is BitsFromBytes Research’s arithmetic on the $79.99 and $99.99 US prices, and it is the hardest of the launch revenue records on this page. Rockstar and Take-Two have not reported any GTA 6 sales: the game launches on November 19, 2026.

Quick Answer: GTA V holds the Guinness records for 11.21 million units and $815.7 million in 24 hours (2013) and reached $1 billion in three days. Red Dead Redemption 2 made over $725 million in three days. In September 2026 dollars, GTA V’s three days are worth $1,439.0 million, which GTA 6 matches with 14.4 million copies at $99.99 or 18.0 million at $79.99. In 24 hours, matching GTA V’s 11.21 million units is a higher bar than its nominal $815.7 million and a lower one than its inflation-adjusted value.

Key Findings

  1. GTA V holds the 24-hour records: 11.21 million units and $815.7 million in September 2013, per Guinness World Records, and $1 billion within three days.
  2. BitsFromBytes Research finds GTA 6 needs 8.2 million to 10.2 million copies in 24 hours to beat GTA V’s $815.7 million, but 11.7 million to 14.7 million to beat it in September 2026 dollars ($1,173.8 million).
  3. Beating GTA V’s 11.21 million units at the $79.99 to $99.99 prices would gross $896.7 million to $1,120.9 million, enough for the nominal revenue record and short of the inflation-adjusted one.
  4. Outside Rockstar, the unit marks are 10 million in three days (Tears of the Kingdom), 8 million (Monster Hunter Wilds), 7 million (Battlefield 6) and 12 million in two weeks (Hogwarts Legacy).
  5. GTA V’s three days in today’s money equal 65.8% to 76.2% of the $1.89 billion to $2.19 billion that Take-Two’s guidance leaves for the whole of October to March, a scale marker between different measures.

What Are the Biggest Video Game Launch Sales Records?

GTA V owns the 24-hour records on Guinness’s list. Guinness World Records lists GTA V’s $815.7 million as the highest-grossing video game in 24 hours; the previous holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, took $500 million on release day. These are the company- or body-reported marks we found, each in its own window:

Title Figure Window Source and date
Grand Theft Auto V $815.7 million 24 hours Guinness World Records (record page)
Grand Theft Auto V 11.21 million units 24 hours Guinness, Oct 8, 2013
Grand Theft Auto V $1 billion 3 days Guinness, Oct 8, 2013
Red Dead Redemption 2 Over $725 million 3 days Take-Two, Oct 30, 2018
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Over 10 million units 3 days Nintendo, via Gematsu, May 17, 2023
Monster Hunter Wilds Over 8 million units 3 days Capcom, Mar 4, 2025
Battlefield 6 Over 7 million copies 3 days Electronic Arts, Oct 16, 2025
Hogwarts Legacy Over 12 million units and $850 million 2 weeks Warner Bros. Games, Feb 23, 2023

The list is not every launch ever, only the figures publishers or Guinness put on the record that we could read at the source. The measures also differ: Guinness and Take-Two describe retail sell-through, the others say units or sales. Red Dead Redemption 2’s release gives no unit figure.

How Many Copies Does GTA 6 Need to Beat Each Record?

Between 7.3 million and 18.0 million, depending on the record, the dollars used and the price paid. BitsFromBytes Research divides each record by one price per copy, once in nominal dollars and once restated to September 2026 with the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), not seasonally adjusted, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics via FRED. The factors are 1.4390 from September 2013, 1.3324 from October 2018 and 1.1200 from February 2023.

At Newzoo’s assumed $88 average price, the inflation-adjusted GTA V three-day record needs 16.4 million copies. The grid assumes one price for every copy, with no regional pricing, platform fees or returns, so it shows scale and is not a forecast. The same prices and the $79.99 versus $99.99 gap are covered on our GTA 6 price page.

Which GTA V Record Is Hardest to Beat?

In today’s dollars, the 24-hour revenue record needs more copies than the 24-hour unit record: 11.7 million to 14.7 million against 11.21 million. BitsFromBytes Research tests three versions of GTA V’s launch day. The unit record asks for 11.21 million copies whatever the price. The nominal revenue record asks for 8.2 million to 10.2 million. The inflation-adjusted revenue record asks for 11.7 million to 14.7 million.

Source: Guinness World Records; U.S. BLS via FRED; Take-Two list prices. Chart: BitsFromBytes Research, CC BY 4.0.

Selling 11.21 million copies would gross $896.7 million at $79.99, $986.5 million at $88 and $1,120.9 million at $99.99. Each of those clears $815.7 million and none reaches $1,173.8 million. A launch day can therefore set a Guinness revenue record and still sell less than GTA V did in September 2013 once prices are restated. GTA V’s per-unit launch-day revenue and its later sales history are on the GTA 5 sales statistics page.

How Do the Unit Records Compare?

Outside Rockstar, the best three-day unit figure we found is Nintendo’s 10 million for Tears of the Kingdom. Capcom reported more than 8 million for Monster Hunter Wilds and Electronic Arts more than 7 million for Battlefield 6 over three days. Warner Bros. Games reported more than 12 million Hogwarts Legacy units and $850 million after two weeks, a much longer window.

The Tears of the Kingdom figure is read through Gematsu’s report of Nintendo’s May 17, 2023 release; Nintendo’s own page was not fetched. “Over” and “surpassed” mean the real figure is higher. Newzoo projects 37 million to 51 million GTA 6 units in launch week, as reported by Video Games Chronicle on July 16, 2026. Its low case is 3.3 times GTA V’s 24-hour units and 3.7 times Tears of the Kingdom’s three days, but the windows differ and the projection is an estimate, not a sales report. Newzoo’s assumptions are on our GTA 6 statistics page.

Can Take-Two’s Guidance Cover a Record Launch?

Only if the guidance is conservative, on our reading. On the method in our GTA 6 revenue analysis, Take-Two’s fiscal 2027 guidance leaves $1,888.2 million to $2,188.2 million of net bookings above the pre-launch pace for October 2026 to March 2027. GTA V’s three days in today’s money, $1,439.0 million, equal 65.8% to 76.2% of that residual. Its 24 hours equal 53.6% to 62.2%, Red Dead Redemption 2’s three days 44.1% to 51.2%, and Hogwarts Legacy’s two weeks 43.5% to 50.4%.

Net bookings and retail sell-through are different measures, so these shares are a scale marker and not a prediction. They do show that a record-breaking opening would use most of what the guidance leaves for the whole of October to March, unless the guidance is conservative.

What Will Change When Official Numbers Arrive?

This table is the one we will fill. Take-Two and Rockstar have not published any GTA 6 sales figure; when they do, we add the number, date and source link in the CSV and in this table. The marks below are the ones to beat in the same window.

Methodology

Sources (retrieved October 30, 2026 unless the CSV says otherwise). Guinness World Records’ record page and its October 8, 2013 article (the article retrieved October 28, 2026); Take-Two’s October 30, 2018 and June 24, 2026 releases and its Form 8-K for the first quarter of fiscal 2027; Capcom’s March 4, 2025 release; Electronic Arts’ and Warner Bros. Games’ Business Wire releases; Gematsu’s report of Nintendo’s release; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U via FRED and the BLS table. Every URL is in the CSV.

Labels. Guinness, Take-Two, Capcom, Electronic Arts, Warner Bros. Games and BLS figures are body- or company-reported (is_primary = TRUE). The Nintendo figure and the Newzoo projection are read through media reports and flagged. Rows marked bfb_calculated = TRUE are BitsFromBytes Research calculations.

Formulas.

  • Copies needed = record value in dollars ÷ one list price per copy.
  • Real value = nominal × (CPI-U Sep 2026 ÷ CPI-U at the launch month), factors rounded to four decimals.
  • Revenue at the unit record = 11.21 million × price.
  • Share of residual = real record value ÷ guidance residual, low and high ends.

Limitations. One price is applied to every copy, with no edition mix, regional prices, platform fees or returns. Windows (24 hours, three days, two weeks) are the ones each publisher chose and are not aligned. Guinness and Take-Two describe retail sell-through; the other titles’ figures may mix sell-through and sell-in. The CPI restatement uses the launch month, not the launch day. Competing sales-record pages and Semrush search-volume data were not used.
