Quick Answer: GTA 5 has sold over 230 million copies as of August 7, 2026, according to Take-Two Interactive (Q1 FY2027 earnings call). Take-Two counts “sold-in” units: copies shipped to retailers plus digital sales. GTA 5 still added 15 million units in the 12 months before that call.

Key Findings
- BitsFromBytes Research finds GTA V is 48.4% of every Grand Theft Auto unit ever sold-in. Take-Two’s FY2026 10-K lists over 225 million GTA V units against over 465 million for the whole series. The share was 36.2% in FY2019.
- BitsFromBytes Research calculates that GTA V supplied 68.6% of the series’ growth from FY2019 to FY2026. The series added 175 million units across those 10-K filings; GTA V added 120 million of them.
- BitsFromBytes Research finds GTA V added 15 million units in each of the last four August-to-August windows. That pace is 41,096 units a day in the year to August 7, 2026, based on Take-Two’s rounded call figures.
- BitsFromBytes Research flags a same-week mismatch in Take-Two’s own documents. The May 21, 2026 earnings call said “nearly 230 million”; the 10-K filed May 22, 2026 said “over 225 million”. The gap is up to 5 million units.
- GTA V set seven Guinness World Records at launch, including 11.21 million units and $815.7 million in revenue in 24 hours, and $1 billion in sales after three days (Guinness World Records, October 8, 2013).
How Many Copies Has GTA 5 Sold in 2026?
Over 230 million units, per Take-Two’s August 7, 2026 earnings call. That is the latest figure Take-Two has given as of October 28, 2026.
Take-Two has published three different wordings in 2026, and all three are true at their own date:
| Date | Take-Two statement | Document | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-02-03 | over 225 million | Q3 FY2026 earnings call | Take-Two Interactive |
| 2026-05-21 | nearly 230 million | Q4 FY2026 earnings call | Take-Two Interactive |
| 2026-05-22 | over 225 million | Form 10-K FY2026 | SEC EDGAR |
| 2026-07-27 | nearly 230 million | 2026 proxy statement | SEC EDGAR |
| 2026-08-07 | over 230 million | Q1 FY2027 earnings call | Take-Two Interactive |
The 10-K is the outlier because its business section restates the previous quarter’s number. In FY2025 and FY2026, the 10-K figure (210 million, 225 million) matched the February call, not the May call. Anyone quoting “225 million” in mid-2026 was reading the annual report; anyone quoting “nearly 230 million” was reading the call.
What does “sold-in” mean?
Sold-in counts copies Take-Two shipped to stores plus digital copies sold, not copies bought by players at the till. Take-Two has used the term for GTA V since at least its October 29, 2013 results release. None of the Take-Two documents fetched for this page gives a sell-through (consumer purchase) total for GTA V.
How Fast Is GTA 5 Still Selling?
About 15 million units a year, measured August to August from Take-Two’s first-quarter calls. The window from August 2021 to August 2022 is the one exception, at 20 million; none of the Take-Two documents fetched for this page attributes the extra units to a single cause.
| Window | Units added | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Aug 2020 → Aug 2021 | 15,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
| Aug 2021 → Aug 2022 | 20,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
| Aug 2022 → Aug 2023 | 15,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
| Aug 2023 → Aug 2024 | 15,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
| Aug 2024 → Aug 2025 | 15,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
| Aug 2025 → Aug 2026 | 15,000,000 | BitsFromBytes Research from Take-Two calls |
Take-Two states GTA V totals in 5-million steps, so each window carries roughly ±5 million of rounding. The flat line is the story: a game launched in 2013 held the same annual pace through the run-up to Grand Theft Auto VI. Take-Two’s CFO said the Grand Theft Auto series grew 3% in net bookings in the April–June 2026 quarter, so the sequel’s countdown has not yet drained spending on the old game.
How long did each 50-million milestone take?
Counted from launch to the first fetched Take-Two statement at or above each milestone (an upper bound, since Take-Two did not report every quarter):
| Milestone | First statement at or above | Days from launch | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 million | 2015-05-18 (nearly 52 million) | 608 | Take-Two Form 8-K |
| 100 million | 2019-05-14 (over 105 million) | 2,065 | Take-Two Form 10-K FY2019 |
| 150 million | 2021-08-02 (more than 150 million) | 2,876 | Take-Two Q1 FY2022 call |
| 200 million | 2024-08-08 (over 200 million) | 3,978 | Take-Two Q1 FY2025 call |
The 100-million row is loose: Take-Two said GTA V was “approaching 100 million” on August 2, 2018, then gave no figure in its fetched filings until May 2019.
How Much of the GTA Series Is GTA 5?
Nearly half. BitsFromBytes Research divides GTA V’s units by the whole series’ units in each 10-K from FY2019, the first annual report to give both:
| Fiscal year (10-K filed) | GTA V units | GTA series units | GTA V share | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2019 (2019-05-14) | over 105,000,000 | over 290,000,000 | 36.2% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2020 (2020-05-22) | over 125,000,000 | over 320,000,000 | 39.1% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2021 (2021-05-19) | over 145,000,000 | over 335,000,000 | 43.3% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2022 (2022-05-17) | over 160,000,000 | over 375,000,000 | 42.7% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2023 (2023-05-26) | over 180,000,000 | over 395,000,000 | 45.6% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2024 (2024-05-22) | over 195,000,000 | over 420,000,000 | 46.4% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2025 (2025-05-20) | over 210,000,000 | over 445,000,000 | 47.2% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
| FY2026 (2026-05-22) | over 225,000,000 | over 465,000,000 | 48.4% | Take-Two Form 10-K |
Formula: GTA V share = GTA V units ÷ GTA series units, both from the same filing. Both inputs are “over” floors, so each share is an estimate within about one percentage point. The only dip, FY2022, is the year the rest of the series grew faster than GTA V’s 15 million; the 10-K does not break down which other titles moved.
Earlier 10-Ks give only the series total: over 185 million in FY2014, rising to over 280 million in FY2018.
How much of Take-Two’s revenue comes from GTA?
12.4% in fiscal 2026, per the FY2026 10-K, down from 68.9% in fiscal 2014, the year GTA V launched. The figure covers all Grand Theft Auto products, including GTA Online. The decline says more about Take-Two’s size (mobile games, NBA 2K) than about GTA demand: GTA V’s unit pace held at 15 million a year over the same late period.
Is GTA 5 the Best-Selling Game of All Time?
No — Minecraft is ahead, and GTA V is second among publisher-reported single titles. BitsFromBytes Research ranks only figures the publishers themselves reported, each at its own date:
| Rank | Game | Units | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Minecraft | over 300,000,000 | 2023-10-24 | Microsoft FY2024 Q1 earnings call |
| 2 | Grand Theft Auto V | over 230,000,000 | 2026-08-07 | Take-Two Q1 FY2027 earnings call |
| 3 | Red Dead Redemption 2 | over 80,000,000 | 2026-03-31 | Take-Two 2026 proxy statement |
| 4 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | 71,530,000 | 2026-06-30 | Nintendo IR |
This is a dated snapshot, not a same-day comparison. Microsoft counts copies sold, Take-Two counts sold-in units, and Nintendo counts units for one platform. The Minecraft row is the newest Microsoft figure fetched for this page; later totals circulating online were not traced to a Microsoft document and are left out.
Where does GTA 5 rank in the United States?
First, on two measures. Take-Two’s May 20, 2020 results release states that GTA V was the best-selling game of the 2010s in the US by both units and dollars, according to The NPD Group (now Circana). In July 2025, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella ranked GTA V first among PlayStation games sold in the US over the previous 30 years, by both units and dollars (reported by Game World Observer, September 10, 2025). Both are measurement-firm estimates, not unit totals.
How Much Did GTA 5 Make on Launch Day?
$815.7 million in its first 24 hours, as verified by Guinness World Records on October 8, 2013. Take-Two’s own October 29, 2013 release put first-day retail sales at “over $800 million”.
| Launch metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | September 17, 2013 | Guinness World Records |
| Units sold in first 24 hours | 11,210,000 | Guinness World Records |
| Revenue in first 24 hours | $815,700,000 | Guinness World Records |
| Days to gross $1 billion | 3 | Guinness World Records |
| Records confirmed | 7 | Guinness World Records |
| Sold-in by October 29, 2013 | nearly 29,000,000 | Take-Two Form 8-K |
| Implied revenue per unit, first 24 hours | $72.77 | BitsFromBytes Research |
The implied figure is $815,700,000 ÷ 11,210,000 units: an average retail value per copy across all editions and markets. It is an estimate; Guinness did not publish the edition or price mix. The Guinness announcement headline says six records, and its body lists seven.
How Many People Play GTA 5 on Steam?
98,840.07 average concurrent players in September 2026, combining both Steam versions. Since the Enhanced edition launched as a separate Steam app, the Legacy and Enhanced versions are counted apart. BitsFromBytes Research adds the two monthly averages so the PC audience is not undercounted:
| Month | Legacy avg | Enhanced avg | Combined avg | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-10 | 57,282.49 | 39,580.68 | 96,863.17 | SteamCharts; sum by BitsFromBytes Research |
| 2025-12 | 81,832.19 | 77,809.52 | 159,641.71 | SteamCharts; sum by BitsFromBytes Research |
| 2026-07 | 68,905.94 | 74,563.15 | 143,469.09 | SteamCharts; sum by BitsFromBytes Research |
| 2026-09 | 47,614.82 | 51,225.25 | 98,840.07 | SteamCharts; sum by BitsFromBytes Research |
Enhanced held 51.8% of the combined average in September 2026, the most recent full month. The Enhanced app hit its all-time peak of 160,737 concurrent players in July 2026; the Legacy app’s all-time peak, 360,761, dates from April 2015. Peaks are not added together because they happened at different moments. All twelve months are in the CSV.
What Keeps GTA 5 Selling Before GTA 6?
Take-Two’s calls point to the online side, not the single-player game. Grand Theft Auto Online recurrent consumer spending rose 27% year over year in the October–December 2025 quarter, the CFO said on the February 3, 2026 call. GTA+ membership grew over 20% year over year, per the November 6, 2025 call. These are Take-Two statements; the documents fetched for this page do not split recent GTA V unit sales by platform or by edition.
What is confirmed: Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (GTA 6 countdown). What is not: any Take-Two forecast for GTA V units after that date. The next quarterly figure will show whether the 15-million-a-year pace survives the sequel. Methodology
Sources (all fetched October 28, 2026). Take-Two Interactive Form 8-K exhibits (2013–2018), Forms 10-K for FY2014–FY2026, and the 2026 proxy statement, all on SEC EDGAR; Take-Two earnings-call statements for 2020–2026, read from published transcripts; Guinness World Records (2013 launch records); Microsoft’s FY2024 Q1 earnings call; Nintendo’s IR sales table; Circana via its analyst’s published post; SteamCharts (Valve Steam Web API data). Every source URL is in the CSV.
Labels. Take-Two, Microsoft and Nintendo figures are company-reported. Circana and SteamCharts figures are estimates. Rows marked bfb_calculated = TRUE are BitsFromBytes Research calculations.
Formulas.
- GTA V share of series = GTA V units ÷ GTA series units (same 10-K).
- Share of series growth FY2019–FY2026 = (225M − 105M) ÷ (465M − 290M) = 120M ÷ 175M = 68.6%.
- 12-month additions = first-quarter call figure (year N) − first-quarter call figure (year N−1).
- Lifetime daily average = 230,000,000 ÷ 4,707 days (September 17, 2013 to August 7, 2026) = 48,863.
- Trailing daily average = 15,000,000 ÷ 365 = 41,096.
- Implied launch revenue per unit = $815,700,000 ÷ 11,210,000 = $72.77.
- Steam combined average = Legacy monthly average + Enhanced monthly average.
Limitations. Take-Two rounds GTA V totals to 5 million and words them as floors (“over”) or ceilings (“nearly”, “approaching”); the CSV keeps that qualifier in its own column. Differences between two rounded figures carry about ±5 million of error. Sold-in is not sell-through. Earnings-call figures come from third-party transcripts of Take-Two’s own statements. Publisher totals in the ranking use different counting methods and dates.
