Headline statistic. TikTok announced on January 23, 2026 that more than 200 million Americans use it. BitsFromBytes Research finds that is 28.2 million above the most a Census-and-Pew reconciliation allows: Pew’s 37% of 269.8 million adults, plus every one of the 72.0 million US residents under 18, totals 171.8 million.

Quick Answer: TikTok’s advertising tools reached 2.33 billion people aged 18+ worldwide in October 2026, up 17.4% in a year, while survey data implies user growth near 1.7%. In the EU, TikTok reports 189 million monthly users, 41.8% of residents. In the US, Pew finds 37% of adults use TikTok.

Key Findings

  1. BitsFromBytes Research finds that TikTok’s “more than 200 million Americans” claim exceeds the unique-resident ceiling by 28.2 million (16.4%). The ceiling is Pew’s adult usage rate applied to Census adults (99.8 million) plus all 72.0 million minors: 171.8 million. The December 2024 claim of 170 million sits at 98.9% of that ceiling.
  2. BitsFromBytes Research calculates that TikTok’s worldwide ad reach grew 10.0 times faster than the survey-measured user base. Ad reach rose 17.4% in the year to October 2026; GWI’s survey share plus internet-user growth implies +1.7%.
  3. BitsFromBytes Research estimates that at least 115.5 million of TikTok’s reported ad reach, 5.0% of the 2.33 billion, sits above 100% of the adult population in 20 locations. All 20 printed locations show a rate of 117.8% or more; Vietnam alone accounts for 25.0 million.
  4. BitsFromBytes Research finds that TikTok’s regulator-facing EU figure is 189 million, 41.8% of EU residents, rising 9.75 million per half-year. A straight-line benchmark puts the next report near 199 million.
  5. BitsFromBytes Research finds that TikTok’s news audience stalled in 2026. Pew’s share of US adults who regularly get news there held at 20%, adults 18-29 fell 4 points to 39%, and TikTok slipped from 2nd to 3rd among eight platforms for news reliance among users.

How Many People Use TikTok Worldwide?

2.33 billion is the number TikTok’s advertising tools report as potential reach among people aged 18+, in October 2026. That is a count of reachable ad audience, not of unique accounts or people. It is up 17.4% (+346 million) on October 2025 and up 0.9% on the previous quarter, per Kepios’ Digital 2026 October statshot (supplied PDF, slide 649), which relays TikTok’s advertising resources. It excludes Douyin, ByteDance’s China app.

The series fell from 1.69 billion in October 2024 to 1.59 billion in January 2025, then rose in every reading to 2.33 billion: +37.9% over two years, computed on values rounded to 0.01 billion.

Method first. This series comes from an advertising tool, and advertising tools count addressable impressions, not people. It is a useful ceiling and a poor census, which the next section tests.

Do Surveys Agree With the Ad-Reach Growth?

No. Surveys imply roughly +1.7% user growth against +17.4% for ad reach. GWI’s quarterly survey asked internet users aged 16+ whether they had used TikTok in the past month. The answer was 35.8% in Q2 2025 and 36.1% in Q2 2026 (34.9% in Q2 2024), per the same statshot (slide 639).

BitsFromBytes Research combines that with published internet-user growth of +0.9%: (36.1 ÷ 35.8) × 1.009 − 1 = +1.7%. Dividing 17.4 by 1.7455 gives 10.0.

Three limits apply. GWI samples a subset of markets, so its share is not a global census. GWI removed Russia from its survey from Q1 2026, and the source warns the values are not directly comparable with earlier reports. Ad reach can also rise when TikTok changes ad formats or reporting, which the statshot itself notes. The 10.0× gap is a flag, not a verdict: one of the two series is not measuring people.

Where Is TikTok’s Ad Audience?

Southeast Asia holds 25.1% of TikTok’s reported ad audience, Southern America 14.4%. Western Asia has 8.6%, Southern Asia 7.3% (low because TikTok is blocked in India, per the slide note), Northern America 7.2%, Central America 6.5%, Eastern Europe 5.3% and Western Europe 2.8% (slide 650).

The audience is weighted toward markets with large young populations and fewer competing ad channels. That matters for anyone reading a “global” TikTok number as a Western one: the US is one location among 20 large ones, taken up next.

How Many Americans Use TikTok?

Between 37% and 58.5%, depending on who is counting. Five published or derived readings sit in the table. None is wrong; they answer different questions on different bases.

The Supreme Court wrote in TikTok Inc. v. Garland (January 17, 2025) that TikTok “has accumulated over 170 million users in the United States”, relaying the company’s figure. Thirteen months after TikTok’s December 2024 statement, the company’s number was 200 million.

Does the 200 Million Claim Fit the Census and Pew?

Not as a count of unique US residents. Pew’s survey (published November 20, 2025) finds 37% of US adults use TikTok. Applied to the Census Bureau’s 269,763,509 residents aged 18+ (July 1, 2025), that is 99.8 million adults. The Census table puts total residents at 341,784,857, which leaves 72.0 million under 18.

Give TikTok the most generous assumption: every minor uses it. The ceiling is 99.8 + 72.0 = 171.8 million, or 50.3% of residents. Pew’s own teen figure is 68% of 13-17-year-olds (survey Sep 25-Oct 9, 2025), so the real ceiling is lower.

The December 2024 claim only works if nearly every American child is a user. The January 2026 claim needs 47.4% of adults, 10.4 points above Pew’s reading, even with every child counted. Formula: (claim − under-18 population) ÷ adults 18+.

What this does not show: that the claim is false. TikTok’s pages do not define “Americans on our platform” or give a period. The dates differ (Pew’s fieldwork is Feb-Jun 2025, the claim Jan 2026). Pew’s page states no margin of error. A count that includes logged-out viewers, visitors, or several accounts per person would exceed a unique-resident ceiling by construction. It does show that the headline cannot be quoted as “200 million US users” next to Census population without that caveat.

Is TikTok’s US Ad Reach Falling?

Yes, by 8.5% in the latest quarter, to 149.9 million adults. TikTok’s tools report 149,867,000 US adults reachable in October 2026, third among countries, after Indonesia (240.1 million) and Brazil (152.1 million). The quarterly change printed on the slide is −8.5%, which implies about 163.8 million a quarter earlier. That is 55.6% of Census adults; Kepios prints 54.1% on a different population base.

Against Pew’s 99.8 million implied adult users, ad reach is 1.5 times larger. The two dates and methods differ, so the ratio is a measure of how far a reach count runs ahead of surveyed use, not an error rate.

How Often Do US Adults Use TikTok?

24% of US adults use it daily, per Pew’s American Trends Panel (Feb 24-Mar 2, 2025, n=5,123). Applied to Census adults that is 64.7 million. Adult use rose from 21% in 2021 to 33% in 2023 and 2024 and 37% in 2025, but Pew changed survey mode over that span (phone, then web and mail, then all three), so the climb is not a clean trend.

How Many People Use TikTok in Europe?

189 million people a month in the EU, per TikTok’s seventh Digital Services Act (DSA) transparency report (August 31, 2026, covering January-June 2026). Eurostat’s EU population on January 1, 2026 was 452.0 million, so TikTok’s attested figure is 41.8% of residents of all ages.

The series is company-reported but regulator-facing, which gives it more weight than a press claim. The fifth-report page and earlier pages say “people in the EU” without restating “monthly”; the sixth and seventh say “every month”.

Growth is steady: +26.0% over two years, +11.8% over the last year, and an average of 9.75 million per half-year. BitsFromBytes Research’s straight-line benchmark is 198.75 million for the H2 2026 report and 208.5 million for H1 2027. If the eighth report lands well off 199 million, either growth changed or the counting did. Check it when TikTok publishes.

For the UK, three methods give three answers: UKOM measured 54% of the population in June 2024 [older data], Kepios relays a 50.0% ad-reach rate among adults, and GWI’s Q2 2026 survey shows 41.3% of internet users 16+. Their bases differ, and none is averaged here.

How Much Content Does TikTok Remove in the EU?

About 104 million pieces in H1 2026, 94.1% actioned without human review. The raw counts across the five reports are below. They are not comparable half to half: the seventh report’s count covers video, live streams, ads, product listings and comments, and the scope is not restated for earlier reports. The jump from 27.8 million to 112 million in one half-year is a scope question first.

H2 202418

Dividing removals by users would produce a rate that looks precise and means nothing across a scope change, so BitsFromBytes Research does not compute one.

Which Countries Have the Most TikTok Users?

Indonesia, with 240.1 million reachable adults in October 2026. The ranking is of ad reach, not users, and the top five are Indonesia, Brazil (152.1 million), the United States (149.9 million), Mexico (111.8 million) and Vietnam (99.7 million), per Kepios slide 653.

How Much of TikTok’s Ad Reach Exceeds the Adult Population?

At least 115.5 million, or 5.0% of the 2.33 billion. Kepios prints the 20 locations where TikTok ad reach is the highest share of the 18+ population. All 20 are above 100%, from Kuwait at 117.8% to Saudi Arabia at 175.4% (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba reaches 387.1% on a base of 101,000).

BitsFromBytes Research converts each rate into surplus: reach × (1 − 100 ÷ rate). Summed over the 20 locations the surplus is 115,470,352.

LocationReach 18+ vs population 18+Reach 18+ (million)Surplus above adults (million)

Iraq158.0%44.216.2
Thailand119.2%70.311.3
Malaysia139.6%38.010.8

The figure is a floor, since only the top 20 rates are printed. It is not all “fake”: reach can include visitors and migrant workers outside a resident population base, and the source itself lists age misstatement, duplicate and fake accounts and differing research dates. The point is narrower. In those places the tool is counting something other than unique adult residents, so ranking countries by reach rewards reporting quirks as well as audiences.

How Much Time Do People Spend on TikTok?

115 minutes a day per active user, the highest of 15 social apps measured by Similarweb in August 2026. That is 15% more than Instagram (100), 31% more than YouTube (88) and 95% more than Facebook (59), per Kepios slide 526. Similarweb counts Android and iOS apps and excludes China, so TikTok here excludes Douyin. Treat it as an estimate.

TikTok opens 13.2 times a day per active user (slide 528), third behind WhatsApp (20.7) and Instagram (14.8). Slide 525 indexes total daily time across all users with YouTube at 100: TikTok is 79.8.

BitsFromBytes Research sums the 15 index values (465.8) to get shares of indexed time among the listed apps:

TikTok ranks seventh among all mobile apps by monthly active users in August 2026 (slide 100). Its time share is higher than its user rank because each user stays long, not because more people use it. Compare our Instagram statistics, YouTube statistics for the app it trails in total time.

Do Americans Get News From TikTok?

20% of US adults regularly get news there, unchanged from 2025 and up from 3% in 2020, per Pew’s October 19, 2026 report (n=5,166, fielded August 24-30, 2026). Among TikTok users the share is 53%, down from 55% in 2025.

The yearly change in the all-adults figure ran +3, +4, +4, +3, +3 and then 0 in 2026. For adults 18-29 it ran +9, +8, +6, +7, +4 and then −4, from 43% to 39%. Adults 30-49 held at 25%, 50-64 rose to 11% and 65+ to 4%.

Among the eight platforms Pew has tracked since 2020 (seven in 2025, when LinkedIn is blank), TikTok ranked 6th for the share of its users who get news there in 2020, 5th in 2021, 4th in 2022, 2nd in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and 3rd in 2026, behind Facebook (57%) and X (57%) with TikTok at 53%. In 2023 it tied Facebook at 43%.

BitsFromBytes Research applies the 20% to Census adults for scale: about 54.0 million adults. The survey is August 2026 and the population is July 2025, so read it as an order of magnitude.

The reading: the news habit grew while the app was new to older adults, then ran into a plateau among the youngest group. A platform’s news reach saturates where its user base does.

Labels. Pew, Census, Eurostat and court figures are survey results or official records (is_primary = TRUE). TikTok figures are company-reported. GWI, Similarweb and ad-reach figures are estimates relayed by Kepios (is_primary = FALSE); the statshot’s file name says “2027” but every slide is dated October 2026. Formulas.

  • Pew-implied adult users = 37% × 269,763,509 = 99,812,498. Under-18 residents = 341,784,857 − 269,763,509 = 72,021,348. Ceiling = 99,812,498 + 72,021,348 = 171,833,846.
  • Excess over ceiling = 200,000,000 − 171,833,846 = 28,166,154 (16.4%). Break-even adult share = (claim − under-18) ÷ 269,763,509.
  • US ad reach ÷ Census adults = 149,867,000 ÷ 269,763,509 = 55.6%. Prior-quarter reach = 149,867,000 ÷ (1 − 0.085).
  • Survey-implied growth = (36.1 ÷ 35.8) × 1.009 − 1 = 1.7%; gap = 17.4 ÷ 1.7455 = 10.0.
  • Surplus reach = Σ reach × (1 − 100 ÷ rate) over 20 locations; share = surplus ÷ 2,330,000,000.
  • EU penetration = 189 million ÷ 452.0 million; benchmark = 189 + (189 − 150) ÷ 4 = 198.75 million.
  • Time share = app index ÷ 465.8.

Limitations. Ad reach is potential reach and mixes methods across countries. GWI and Similarweb exclude China and sample a subset of markets. Pew’s pages give no margin of error. Company figures carry no stated definition. Population bases differ by source and date. DSA reports 3 to 5 do not restate “monthly” on the fetched pages, and the sixth report’s page header (April 29, 2026) differs from press reports of its release (February 27, 2026). We have no access to TikTok’s internal data, so the ceiling test constrains the claim and cannot resolve it.
